December 2004 - Page 12
/12/04. We travelled west to Kato Stalos, then onto the Rodopos Peninsular, where the highlights were two female Hen Harriers. We were anxious to visit Agia Reservoir after reading an article in  the Cretan Journal stating it had been completely drained, not the best action for wildlife conservation. How completely and for how long it was left empty will of course determine the longterm effect on the wildlife. It is one of the premier Crete wildlife site.  It was where I recorded a damselfly extending its range to Crete! As you will see from the photo below the reservoir had been refilled, and was full of birds by the time of our visit. Species recorded included: Widgeon, Mallard, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Teal, Little Grebe, Moorhen, Coot, Shoveler and Kingfisher.

/12/04: Humming Bird Hawkmoth in garden. An afternoon visit to Lake Kournas was rewarded by recording a Little Gull, see photo below. Other species recorded: Wigeon, Mallard, Pochard, c. 30 Little Grebe and Black-necked Grebes.

/12/04: Flock of at least 20 Corn Buntings on local patch, photographed on power lines. See below

/12/04: Juvenile Hedgehog drinking from puddle as we drove down our lane!

/12/04: We stopped at the taverna approx 2km south of the Imbros Gorge entrance. Several Griffon Vultures and an immature Golden Eagle were recorded and a pair of what I have provisionally recorded as Bonelii's Eagle. See photo below. Your comments welcome.
