6th: Pale phase Booted Eagle over Maheri Gorge, at 1.30pm Isabelline Wheatear appeared on bare top of conifer tree, good views with telescope from balcony (see poor photo below)


8th:
Meeting at Stylos stream church - We started by seeing Swallowtail and Cleopatra butterflies near the road then above us Alpine Swifts. At the stream we saw Blue-tailed Damselfly. Along the river path Chris spotted a Hoopoe and then identified a Pheasant call. We have walked this area before and almost certainly heard Pheasant calls but they had just not registered, fresh ears and eyes to the rescue. Night Heron, Woodchat Shrike and Tree Sparrows were other highlights. Chris a sharp, keen observer was unfortunately only on holiday in Crete, but I will try to persuade him to provide this site with his trip report complete with digiscope photos (photos taken with a digital camera through a telescope). 9th:
Male Marsh Harrier at Aptera

11th: Moronis River Reserve, Souda Bay - 1 Night Heron, 2 Little Egret, Moorhen, Kingfisher, 3-4 Common Sandpipers.
From our balcony Provarma 4pm Booted Eagle, 4.30 Night Heron.

12th:
9.30am Booted Eagle over Maheri Gorge and a little later an Eleanora's Falcon flew serenely in from a southerly direction. Chaffinch nest with young.
Report from A&M Akritiri between monasteries - 2 Black Kites, Woodchat Shrike, Pallid Swifts?, Black-eared & Common Wheatears, Redstarts.
Stavros - 2 Little Egrets, Hen Harrier, ! Common Sandpiper, Woodchat Shrike, Young Stonechat family.

14th:
Stylos stream church area, 5 Night Herons, 1 Hoopoe
Report from A&M Draponos - Common & Black-eared Wheatears, Chukar, Short-toed Lark.

15th:
Greenfinch, Serin & Sardinian Warbler display flights. 6pm Black Kite watched from above Neo Horio to South of Maheri Gorge.

16th:
With A&M to Taverna Ψυоро Пnyaδι at perhaps 700m near Mount Halave. 7 sightings of Griffon Vulture at least 3 individual birds. male Harrier sp. Woodchat Shrike, Black-eared Wheatear, Wren, at least 4 Chukar, 4 Woodpigeons, Sparrowhawk and Bonelli's Eagle.

17th:
Heard a couple of Golden Oriole calls, and Cuckoo. 10.15 female Marsh Harrier and almost certainly the same individual at 3.30pm, first spring plumage!
At 5.30pm Alan of A&M called from his mobile, Black Kite, Stylos stream church area. I managed to see it through telescope from our back balcony, thanks again Alan.

18th:
a.m. Moronis River Reserve, Souda Bay - 3 Greenshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret. Swallowtail & Painted Lady Butterflies.
p.m. Stylos River area - Osprey, Cuckoo, Several Reed Warblers, 1 Night Heron

20th:
Petres Gorge - 2 Common Sandpipers, 2 Little Egrets, Emperor Dragonfly!
Platanes River mouth from Rethymnon Old Road - 3 Greenshank, 2 Wood Sandpipers, 5 Little Stints, 2 Ruff, 3 Little Ringed Plovers, Yellow Wagtails, I Black Winged Stilt, I Squacco Heron.
North of Adele - 2 Griffon Vultures, Buzzards.
Georgioupolis Lake - Little Bittern, 2 Little Crakes, 2 Coot broods.

22nd: Beside Kalives/Stylos Road, Hoopoe, Gecko front balcony after dark.
From A&M Exopoli - Pair of Red-footed Falcons

24th:
On a walk with A&M at Stylos stream church area: Several Golden Orioles, Night Heron, Common Sandpiper, Willow Warbler.

26th: Petres Gorge stream - I Little Egret, 1 Night Heron, I Little Ringed Plover.
A&M report: 12 Griffon Vultures seen from Tableland, above Askyfou, 3 Turtle Doves Asigonia, Hoopoe at Exopoli.

27th:
Liquid song of a Golden Oriole heard from balcony.

28th: Stylos/Kalives road - Hoopoe. West kalives river bridge - 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Coot, Adult & 1st Summer Night Herons (photo below adult on left)

29th: Georgioupolis sea church - Little Egret
Georgioupolis Water - Marsh Harrier, 2+ Garganey. Reported Little Crake & Moustached Warbler.
Lake Kournas - Little Egret, 3 Griffon Vultures flew over. Red-rumped Swallows

30th: Another great trip with A&M. First to Geropotamos Bridge (see photo below) where we recorded Reed and Sedge Warbler, Moorhen, Blue Rock Thrush and Griffon Vulture. Emperor Dragonfly and Blue tailed Damselfly.
We later stopped for coffee on a side road north of Perama, which proved a good move as we recorded our first Bee-eaters of the year as a flock of c.25 flew over, a female Golden Oriole flew into a nearby thicket and a male Marsh Harrier gave us good views.
Then south through Anoghia into the Mount Idi area where highlights were a gathering of 9 Griffon Vultures, and an Alpine Chough colony. Also noted Common and Black-eared Wheatears, Spotted Flycatcher and Woodpigeons.
a.m. T&J reported from the Vamos area: Laying in bed listening to the magical sound of Golden Orioles!
